07.16.07

Phil AllenJuly 16, 2007 (Scranton, Iowa) — Scranton Manufacturing Co, Inc., announced today that Phil Allen, President of Elliott Equipment Co, has been named Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing in its New Way® trucks division.

“Phil has done a terrific job as President of Elliott Equipment Company, and we look forward to his leadership as a member of the growing New Way® team,” said Michael McLaughlin, President of Scranton Manufacturing Co., Inc. “Like Elliott, New Way® is focused on innovation and growth, and we think Phil’s ethics, insights and experience will be very valuable in helping to guide New Way® in the years ahead.”

New Way® manufactures a full line of affordable refuse equipment, which includes front loaders, rear loaders, side loaders and automated side loaders in sizes ranging from 6 yards to 43 yards.

“New Way® is one of the companies in the world that I most admire,” said Allen, “I'm really looking forward to working with Mike and the New Way family to help with all of the amazing things the company is doing.”

Allen added that one of the reasons he was attracted to New Way® was because it is family owned with strong values. “I entered this business some 29 years ago when many of the manufacturers of refuse trucks were family owned and operated,” said Allen. “The pride and values of a family owned business can not be underestimated. One by one they have gone by the wayside never to achieve the prominence they once had after selling out to conglomerates.”

“As a distributor, I saw the decline in quality, customer satisfaction, and overall goodwill between the factories and distributors,” observed Allen. “Maybe I’m nostalgic, but I think New Way® has the opportunity to take all the great features of a family-owned business and make it a valuable selling point with our customers, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”

In 1979, Allen joined Elliott Equipment Company of Davenport, Iowa – a Midwestern distributor of all types of refuse, municipal, and sewer equipment – as a salesman and later became President. Under Allen’s leadership, Elliott Equipment’s sales grew from 1.5 million to 13 million dollars and expanded from one location in Davenport with eight employees to three locations with 25 employees. Allen also expanded the product mix from six products to a dozen prime product lines, and led it to become one of the leading used equipment distributorships in the country.

Allen is a 1973 graduate of Eastern Washington University with majors in finance and economics. He served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps from 1973 through 1976. From 1976 through 1979 he served as a manufacturing engineer with the military products division of Texas Instruments in Dallas, Texas, building radars and anti-submarine detection equipment. During his career in the refuse equipment industry, Allen has earned numerous awards and recognitions, including:

  • In 1995, special recognition from the National Solid Waste Management Association for his membership efforts in Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska.
  • In 1997, the first Special Governor’s Award issued by the National Solid Waste Management Association at the Atlanta Waste Expo for contributions made to the waste industry.

Allen has also been president of the national Labrie and New Way® Dealer Councils as well as a past member of the national Leach Company and Nilfisk distributor councils, and he has been awarded the coveted honorary “Leach Red Coat” award from Fred Leach.

Allen and his wife Carol are very active in fund raising for the “Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund” for children of soldiers lost in military action, and also for the Shrine Children Hospitals. They reside in Bellevue, Iowa, and will be relocating to Carroll, Iowa, near New Way®’s™ headquarters in Scranton. They are the parents of three children and have four grand children.
